Introduction:The market is flooded with coffee products that claim to deliver rapid weight loss, attracting numerous consumers seeking to shed pounds. However, the hidden health risks cannot be ignored. An investigation by China Central Television (CCTV) revealed that several popular slimming coffee products illegally contain the banned drug sibutramine, which can lead to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases with long-term use. This article delves into the full story—from consumer victim experiences and police investigations to expert health warnings—to help you avoid falling into the trap of illegal slimming products.

In recent years, "slimming coffee" products that promise effortless weight loss have become a trend in the market, drawing in many who hope for quick results. However, a deep-dive investigation by CCTV has uncovered the hidden dangers behind these products: some commercially available slimming coffees are secretly mixed with nationally prohibited pharmaceutical ingredients. Far from promoting healthy weight loss, they may instead cause irreversible harm to the body.

One consumer, who had little time for exercise due to a busy work schedule but still wanted to lose weight effectively, purchased a trial pack of a certain slimming coffee after seeing an online advertisement. Unexpectedly, after drinking it, they began experiencing symptoms such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and palpitations. It wasn’t until they sought medical attention that they discovered the coffee might have contained banned substances.

The consumer immediately reported the issue to the police. Samples of the coffee provided by the consumer were sent for testing, and the results revealed the presence ofsibutramine—a centrally acting appetite suppressant that was banned in China as early as 2010 due to its high risk to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems.

Based on the online purchase order information provided by the consumer, the police identified the shipping location as a courier distribution center in a residential community in Lanzhou. By analyzing logistics records, they quickly located the suspect’s rented accommodation and seized a large quantity of slimming coffee in two rental units.

The Dark Side of Slimming Coffee: Banned Drug Sibutramine Poses Health Risks, Police Bust Cross-Provincial Production and Sales Ring

Test results showed that all 18 varieties of slimming coffee tested positive for sibutramine. The authorities also confiscated a heat sealer and packaging boxes used for sealing. The suspects claimed they were only responsible for packaging and shipping as warehouse staff and had no knowledge of the coffee’s origin.

Upon further analysis of the online store data, the police found that the registered identities of 22 involved online shops were all forged. They then traced the financial flows and order records, ultimately uncovering a nationwide illegal production and sales syndicate.

During the operation, police arrested 33 suspects directly involved in the production and sale, along with 3 masterminds. They also seized 22 sales websites, 6 production sites, 3 warehouses,as well as 130,000 unsold toxic coffee packets, with the case involving over 15 million yuan.

In fact, this is not the first time slimming coffee has been investigated for regulatory violations. Police found that even though some consumers were aware the products might contain sibutramine, they were still willing to take the risk in pursuit of quick weight loss effects.

Health experts emphasize that there are no shortcuts to weight loss. While banned ingredients may show short-term results, they can lead to palpitations, hypertension, or even more serious consequences. If you have weight loss needs, consult a professional doctor and never trust unverified "miracle weight-loss products."
