Introduction:Recently, the global coffee market has experienced an imbalance between supply and demand. Domestic coffee prices in Vietnam have continued to soar, and with multiple challenges such as transportation and weather conditions, the supply pressure on Robusta beans has intensified. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the latest developments in Vietnam and Brazil, the two major producing regions, explores the key reasons behind the record-high prices, and offers practical insights on market trends to help you grasp future coffee bean price movements.
Although the global coffee market has recently shown slight signs of stabilization, it remains at a relatively high level. One of the main reasons is the insufficient rainfall in Brazil’s main producing regions and the continuously rising prices in the Vietnamese market, which have brought uncertainty to overall supply. Local coffee farmers in Vietnam are generally holding back sales, waiting for higher offers, causing many traders to be unable to secure sufficient raw materials as scheduled. Some are even facing the risk of bankruptcy due to their inability to fulfill orders. In addition, affected by the Red Sea shipping crisis, transportation costs from Asia to Europe have increased significantly, further driving up the market price of Robusta coffee.
According to official data from Vietnam, although the country’s coffee exports in January increased by 47.6% year-on-year to 210,000 tons, the spot price of coffee in the central highlands region hit a new all-time high, with quotes soaring to 77–79 million VND per ton. Compared to the previous level of about 76–77 million VND, the annual increase has reached as high as 80%. This upward trend is mainly due to farmers’ optimistic outlook on future prices, leading them to hoard their stock rather than sell, which has sharply reduced market circulation. Even with higher bids, traders are struggling to fulfill existing purchase contracts.

Meanwhile, international shipping routes have also undergone significant adjustments due to frequent conflict incidents. Attacks by the Houthi militants on Red Sea cargo ships have forced many vessels to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. This has not only extended shipping times by at least three weeks but has also caused container freight rates to surge by approximately 150%. Such logistical bottlenecks have prompted many international buyers to turn to sourcing Robusta coffee from Brazil in hopes of reducing delays and risks.
It is worth noting that although supply from major Robusta-producing regions such as Vietnam and Indonesia is visibly tight, positive signals have emerged from Brazil. Brazil’s Robusta coffee exports in 2023 reached 4.7 million bags, a significant increase of 212% compared to 2022, indicating that its production capacity is gradually expanding. Furthermore, Brazil’s official forecasting agency CONAB predicts that the country’s Robusta coffee production in 2024 will further rise to 17.1 million bags. If this target is achieved, it could bring a certain degree of relief to the globally tense supply situation.
Market experts point out that Minas Gerais in Brazil, the country’s main Arabica coffee-producing region, has continued to experience suboptimal rainfall conditions. Over the past week, cumulative rainfall amounted to only 25 mm, about 53% of the historical average, posing a potential threat to future yields. Although the Brazilian exporters' group Comexim has revised its 2023/24 coffee export estimate upward from 41.5 million bags to 44.9 million bags, showing some room for adjustment on the supply side, the overall market sentiment remains cautious—especially regarding certified stocks, where Robusta exchange-certified inventories decreased by 66,000 bags in January, reflecting still-low short-term market liquidity.
For coffee importers and roasters, the current market conditions mean they must adjust their procurement strategies more flexibly, including appropriately diversifying supply sources and locking in prices in advance to avoid further cost fluctuations. For consumers, terminal prices for Robusta coffee may continue to be affected in the coming period. It is advisable to monitor production progress and weather changes in Brazil’s producing regions to identify better opportunities for purchasing.
