Introduction:Suning Mini Store has opened its first standalone coffee specialty shop in Nanjing, testing the market with a "convenience store + coffee" model. It has launched 27 beverages at once, covering classic coffee, tea drinks, and ice products, with prices ranging from 12 to 28 yuan. Relying on its nationwide network of over 5,000 stores and precise user data, Suning Coffee holds advantages in customer acquisition and operational efficiency. This article details its product strategy, store positioning, and industry competition landscape, giving you an insight into the new variables in the convenience store coffee segment.

The first coffee specialty store under Suning Mini Store recently began trial operations in Nanjing, marking this retail giant’s official push into the coffee sector. The store adopts a "convenience store + coffee" hybrid model, launching 27 beverages across five categories—including classic coffee, tea drinks, and ice products—at one time, with prices ranging from 12 to 28 yuan to meet diverse consumer needs.

Unlike traditional coffee shops, Suning Coffee leverages its nationwide network of over 5,000 Suning Mini Stores and precise operational data within a three-kilometer radius, demonstrating significant advantages in customer acquisition and daily operational efficiency. This is also the fourth format—following vending machines, rapid delivery, and unmanned coffee machines—that Suning has employed to establish a presence in coffee consumption scenarios.

The store, which began trial operations on October 10, not only offers classic coffee options such as Americano, latte, and cappuccino but also introduces popular beverage categories in recent years, including fruit tea, milk foam, sparkling water, and slushies.In-store beverage prices are mainly concentrated in the 12 to 28 yuan range, falling within the mass-market consumption level. They are complemented by light baked goods such as soft European-style bread and mousse cakes, enriching consumer choices.

In terms of store layout, this coffee specialty shop is situated on the second floor of a Suning Mini Store. The overall interior design features dark brown and gray as the main tones, paired with clean linear designs and wooden finishes to create a modern and comfortable dining environment. The target clientele primarily includes white-collar office workers in the vicinity, while also catering to the daily coffee needs of local residents.

In fact, this is not Suning’s first foray into the coffee market. As early as last year, Suning Mini Store introduced self-operated coffee services in the form of counter service across more than 1,000 stores nationwide. Official data at the time showed that its coffee preparation window could make each cup in just about 40 seconds—an efficiency higher than the 60 to 90 seconds typically required by most traditional equipment—making it suitable for providing convenient services to community users.

According to the “China Top 100 Convenience Stores List” released by the China Chain Store & Franchise Association in 2018, Sinopec’s Easy Joy ranked first with 27,259 stores, while Suning Mini Store came in fourth, following 7-Eleven and FamilyMart. As of March 2019, Suning Mini Store had covered 71 cities in China, with its total number of stores surpassing 5,000. Despite being established relatively recently, its expansion speed has been quite rapid.

Notably, this coffee specialty store opened by Suning is its fourth consumption scenario for exploring the coffee market, following vending machines, 30-minute express delivery, and unmanned coffee machines. Through online-offline integration, consumers can not only visit the store for an in-person experience but also place orders via mobile apps or mini-programs, further broadening sales channels.

Currently, competition in the convenience store coffee market is becoming increasingly fierce. For example, FamilyMart’s Pikari Coffee has achieved double-digit sales growth for four consecutive years, with a 2019 fiscal year sales target of surpassing 100 million cups; Sinopec’s Easy Joy has entered the market strongly by leveraging resources from its over 20,000 gas station convenience stores; and traditional beverage companies such as Nongfu Spring and Coca-Cola have also launched coffee products, including “Carbon Bing” cola coffee and ready-to-drink coffee products following the acquisition of Costa. In addition, OYO also launched the first store of its chain coffee brand “Fenran Coffee” in September.

With emerging brands such as Luckin Coffee cultivating the market, convenience store coffee has gradually become a popular segment since last year. For Suning, this coffee specialty store in Nanjing is not only a brand test but also an important step in its strategy to diversify consumption scenarios and extend its reach for traffic acquisition. In the future, Suning Mini Store plans to continue developing its own brand products, expand SKU diversity, and integrate coffee with related services such as Life Help and Su Xiansheng, driving overall sales growth through a high cost-performance experience.
